Another thing:

Oriental medicine has a long tradition of face reading. If you look up "sanpaku" on wikipedia or elsewhere, you'll see personality traits attributed to those showing a lot of white in their eyes. While I think this is overgeneralization, there is probably a hard kernel of truth underneath a lot of assumptions.

As hypnotists, we see all sorts of changes in physiology depending on the state of the client. Eyes may widen when aroused or hypervigilant. Features soften when relaxed. Perhaps some continuing education in these areas would be beneficial to the practitioner.

Spiegel spent much of his career refining and defending his perspective that hypnotizability was a trait that individuals possess along a continuum (none to very). Clearly, most of us in individual practice have a very different attitude and perspective. My own experience and belief is that, outside of neurological impairment, trance is an inherent talent we possess and can refine.

Having said all of this, the eye roll is an interesting indicator of trance. I see it a lot of it in somnambulistic trance. I don't do a lot of testing with clients, but when doing a demo or working with a group, it's a great way to ratify trance.

I'd like to see some kind of explanation as to how this is supposed to work. I'm having a hard time figuring out how a purely muscular/physical ability ties in to how well someone can enter the trance state. I mean, I can wiggle my ears individually; does that mean I have better hearing than someone who can't?

While I'm grousing, let me add that I cringe every time I read or hear the words "susceptible to hypnosis." Haven't we gotten past that mindset yet?
